Canals are most important resource for irrigation and drinking water that have been badly polluted with industrial waste material and sewage water. Contaminated canal water is a major source of diarrheal diseases in Pakistan. Phuleli canal in Hyderabad is a main water supply source for both irrigation as well as human use. However, it is greatly polluted with industrial and domestic waste.
Water is a basic need an absolute requirement for the survival of human. Supply of good quality and safe water is important for the public health. Water for domestic use should be clean, colorless, unscented, satisfying to drink and free from impurities harmful to health. Phuleli canal was constructed in 1955 on the left bank of river Indus upstream of Ghulam Muhammad barrage to meet the irrigation requirements of the locality. The canal has the discharge capacity of 14,350 cusecs. Phuleli canal causing contamination and hazards to the health of local people and irrigation system. This canal provides water to a population of more than two million. Phuleli Canal has been supplying drinking water to Hyderabad from days of its construction.

Water pollution affects all the major water bodies of the world such as lakes, rivers, oceans and groundwater. Polluted water is unfit for drinking and for other useable processes including agricultural and industrial use. The effects of water pollution are not only harmful to human beings, but to plants, animals, fish and birds. Polluted water also contains viruses, bacteria, parasites and other harmful microorganisms, which can cause waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid and hepatitis. Due to water pollution, the entire ecosystem gets disturbed. The Phuleli canal and lined channel are two major canals that provide water for agriculture, industries and domestic use to the districts of Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin and Thatta.
There are dozens of the drainage outlets from entire Hyderabad city in 15-20 Km length discharging untreated sewage, garbage, industrial waste matter, laundry factories sewage, cattle excreta from hundreds of the cattle farms established on canal side slaughterhouses waste and hospitals waste directly disposed off into the Phuleli canal. It is pity that beautiful canals of Sindh are converted to dirty drains and their water has become unhealthy for the use of human beings and animals. Further that all hospital waste, discharge from 40 main sewage lines of Hyderabad city sewage from 1000 Dhobi Ghaats, waste matter from 500 cattle farms located on both sides of canal, 12 plastic factories sewage from Tando Muhammad Khan, Matli, Talhar towns and dozens of villages is deposited into these irrigation canals.
Water that has a harmful effect on living things is termed as water pollution. Polluted water is unhealthy for drinking and for other useable processes. It is also not suitable for agricultural and industrial use. There are about so many known water contaminants. The effects of water pollution are harmful to human beings, plants, animals, fish and birds. Polluted water also contains viruses, bacteria, parasites and other harmful microorganisms which can cause waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid and hepatitis. Due to water pollution, the entire ecosystem gets disturbed. The major sources of water pollution can be classified as municipal, industrial, and agricultural.
Those living in the downstream areas including Tando Mohammad Khan and Badin, are also facing serious health and environmental issues. There are various locations where wastewater is thrown directly into the Phuleli Canal. This practice is polluting the Phuleli Canal at an alarming rate and it is clear violation of sections 11, 13, 14 and 15 of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act, 1997.
The wastewater of Pretabad is discharged into the canal through pumping station which has been constructed by HAD Wasa without considering that canal water is being used for drinking purpose by the local people at downstream of this canal.
The main slaughterhouse of Hyderabad is located on the right side of the Phuleli Canal in the area of Pretabad and Laloo Lashari village in which more than thousands of animals are being slaughtered every day. The huge amount of remains of slaughterhouse is directly dumped along with the blood of animals into the canal. It is estimated that hundreds of tons of animals wasted from the slaughterhouse per day is being thrown. This solid waste of slaughtered animals is a cause of slow poison in the canal’s water and a trouble for the people who live near the slaughterhouse. Besides a number of poultry farms are established on the right side of canal. The wastewater solid waste and dead chickens are thrown into the canal.
It is worthy to declare that the wastewater and solid waste of Hyderabad being disposed of into the canal may cause serious diseases and for the people as well as for plants and animals. The district municipal administration Hyderabad HDA and WASA must take necessary action and stop throwing solid waste into the fresh water canal. Buffalo farms and slaughterhouses should be shifted to cattle colony.
Water quality monitoring should be done regularly and water filtration plants should be installed at suitable places for providing safe drinking water to the residents in the command area of Phuleli Canal.

Water for residential utilize ought to be clear, lackluster, scent less, lovely to drink, sensibly cool and free from polluting influences unsafe to wellbeing. Pakistan is honored with gigantic surface and groundwater assets.
Household sewage contains natural and inorganic materials, for example, phosphates and nitrates. Natural materials are sustenance and vegetable waste, though inorganic materials originate from cleansers and cleansers. Generally individuals dump the family squanders in the close-by water source, which prompts water contamination. A portion of the contaminations from modern source incorporate lead, mercury, asbestos, nitrates, phosphates, oils, and so forth.
The Phuleli Canal goes through the edge of Hyderabad city, alongside the Pinyari Canal to its right side. Numerous people have constructed their homes along its bank side. Besides, it is likewise a wellspring of direct transfer for untreated local and mechanical wastewater and strong waste. The utilization of water has expanded, and with its expansion, the volume of wastewater has likewise expanded. This is making genuine designing and ecological dangers for the general population of Hyderabad.
The wastewater of Pretabad is released into the trench through pumping station which has been developed by HDA/Wasa without considering that waterway water is being utilized for drinking reason by the neighborhood individuals at downstream of this channel.Untreated sewage of Hyderabad city is the key wellspring of expanding contamination through release of sewage water into Phuleli channel making defilement and perils the strength of neighborhood individuals and water system framework. This trench gives water to a populace of more than two million of three major locales in bring down Sindh. Sewage water from phuleli waterway was examined from various station focuses and broke down for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), add up to disintegrated strong (TDS) deposits, chlorides, hardness, alkalinity, broke up oxygen (DO), and distinctive cations like sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) to watch the impact of civil release upon the nature of water utilized for water system reason and furthermore to drink reason.
This waterway water defiled with pathogens and hurtful poisonous chemicals from effluents is risky to both the environment and all life shapes whose survival relies upon it.
Those living in the downstream ranges, including Tando Mohammad Khan and Badin, are likewise confronting genuine wellbeing and ecological concerns. There are different areas where untreated wastewater is tossed specifically into the Phuleli Canal. The main slaughterhouse of Hyderabad is situated on the bank of the Phuleli Canal in the region of Pretabad and LalooLashari town wherein about more than 1,000 creatures are being butchered each day.
The solid waste which is dumped into the canal water is the only reason that is creating serious poisons besides this poultry farms have also established and they are also dumping their solid waste blood and dead chickens into the same canalwater.  The channel water is the main wellspring of drinking water for Badin in light of the fact that the groundwater is saline. It is qualified to specify that the wastewater and strong misuse of Hyderabad being discarded into the waterway may cause genuine sicknesses and results for the general population and additionally for widely varied vegetation. The region metropolitan organization, Hyderabad, HDA and Wasa must make vital move and stop the dumping of strong waste and effluents into the freshwater waterway. Wild homesteads and slaughterhouses ought to be moved to steers province.
Appropriateness of groundwater for drinking, water system and mechanical purposes relies on its quality Groundwater contamination is typically followed back to four principle birthplaces viz .mechanical, household, horticultural and over misuse of groundwater which makes medical issues.
All the enormous urban areas of the nation are looking of safe transfer of wastewater. There is no any treatment plant where the sewerage could be dealt with and securely arranged off. The city Hyderabad, the second biggest city of Sindh territory, is additionally confronting this issue, where the wastewater is being arranged off by methods for directing into Phuleli or Pinyarichannels with no treatment Different daily papers likewise announced unsafe lethal impacts on people, creatures, soil and plants, Daily Dawn detailed that exceptionally poisonous run-off from plastic manufacturing plants, illicit cows pens and butcher houses was being discharged in Phuleli waterway and the general population of Badin and Tando Mohammad Khan regions are constrained to utilize it for drinking reason. Hence the utilization of contaminated trench water of Phuleli channel has put lives of a large number of individuals in danger. Groundwater defilement can be related with various sources, for example, drainage of agrochemicals, sewage and modern wastewater. Drainage from unlined sewage and mechanical wastewater channel makes an incredible risk groundwater quality  Groundwater is in nature renewed by surface water from precipitation, streams and waterways. The length of Phuleli channel is around 153 km with release limit of 14859 cusecs. Its charge range is around 0.93 million sections of land. In Pakistan, rainstorm season begin in summer from July to September which contributes around 70% of the aggregate yearly precipitation. Around 30% of aggregate rain fall happen in winter while spring and harvest time are dry seasons.Around 220,000 cubic meters of waste water is additionally discharged every day in the trench from numerous sewerage directing stations, as per the Sindh Environment Protection Authority (Sepa).
Now, Water quality observing ought to be done consistently and water filtration plants ought to be introduced at appropriate spots for giving safe drinking water to the occupants in the summon range of Phuleli Canal.
